The God of the Living

The Sadducees didn’t believe in the resurrection. They were seriously mistaken. That error can lead to pessimism. If there’s no hope waiting in the end, then things must be getting worse and worse. That’s not the gospel. The good news of the kingdom is that creation and human life will flourish.

God IS the God of the living. That means He is not only the future God of those who will be resurrected but the present God of those who are alive. He accomplishes what concerns us in the here and now as much as He will in the life of the world to come. In every insult, rift and war, and pandemic, He suffers still yet loves the more, and lives to continue what He started on the first Easter: make all things new. There will be no end to the increase of that project. And it leads to the resurrection of the dead and life everlasting.
