April 3, 2024 Daily Dose of Discernment

It is a night to be observed for the Lord for having brought them out from the land of Egypt; this night is for the Lord, to be observed by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations. (Exodus 12:42)

The Church is the new Israel; not a replacement, but a continuation, a fulfillment. We are one with our fathers because we are together the people of God. And although none of them, even with exemplary piety, obtained their reward, God has a better plan for all of us, that their faith and ours would make one completed whole, and that we would receive His promise together, not apart (Hebrews 11:39-40).

Israel’s history is our history, and their calling ours as well. Like them, God brought us out of our Egypt, and like them we are to keep the everlasting ordinance to remember our deliverance from bondage. Because the Eucharist is the fulfillment of the Passover. As our fathers observed the feast of their emancipation, so we are to celebrate the memorial of our Easter redemption. Let us obey not merely for compliance, but with an understanding of God’s amazing grace and the blessing of assembling together with our brothers.
