April 6, 2024 Daily Dose of Discernment
For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. (2 Corinthians 5:1)
Much of Western Christianity has been influenced by the teachings of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, particularly the belief that man’s postmortem hope consists in existing as spirit beings in an eternal, ethereal place. That and the confession of the resurrection of the body in the creeds are a contradiction most are not aware of.
God made man a unique hybrid of the spiritual and the material and intended for him to live forever. He created us for incorruption, and made us in the image of his own eternity (Wisdom 2:23). When death was introduced into the world through sin, He made a provision through His Son to conquer it and eventually abolish its effects completely. In the meantime, even if our bodies are decaying and we still die, we know we have a replacement that is better and incorruptible waiting to be put on when the time comes. That’s the good news Easter brings.
