“The Son can do nothing on His own, but only what He sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does, the Son also does.” (John 5:19)

There is a false gospel being taught that portrays God the Son and God the Father as a good cop and a bad cop, respectively. It’s as if the Father is an angry God who doesn’t forgive and Jesus is the merciful Son who absorbs the “divine” wrath to spare sinful men. The truth is that God is like Jesus. He has always been. There is absolutely no dichotomy between them. As the creed proclaims, such as the Father is, such is the Son. And as Jesus says, he who has seen the Father has seen the Son. Jesus heals, forgives, reconciles and gives life because that’s who the Father is and that’s what He does.

As brothers of Jesus and children of God ourselves, we are called to partake of the divine likeness, so that such as the Father is, such are we, and we only do what we see our Father doing.
