The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. (Mark 1:1)
Not long after the execution of Peter and Paul in Rome, Mark wrote a subversive declaration. He proclaimed that the real gospel, that is, the good news, is about Jesus, the true Son of God and bringer of peace and hope, titles the Roman Emperor claimed apply to him. He announced the establishment of the kingdom of Jesus, the rightful Lord. These statements constituted capital offenses.
While the courage of the first Christians is admirable, we should realize the same grace that gave them boldness is at work in us today so that we can be strengthened by it. We should understand as well that it is incumbent upon us to fulfill the purpose of that grace and be ready to face our challenges in the Church today. Let us not give in to the temptation of making excuses out of the slightest adversity for not doing the work of the Lord. But may our fathers' example of bravery and commitment inspire us to also serve the Lord without fear.
