“The word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias.” (Lk 3:2b)
After identifying the names and jurisdictions of the political and religious figures of the time, Luke proclaims that the word of the Lord came to John. This goes to show that hope doesn't come from powers and principalities but from God through the work of His people. A priest put it very well when he said that one hour of Eucharist does more toward the amelioration of the world than a whole day of Congress sessions.
The good news John delivered was that the Messiah is coming to establish His kingdom on earth. When He does, He will right the wrong. This means that systemic corruption will pass away and will be replaced by God's ways. Therefore, if we are to live and flourish in the life of the world to come, we need to repent, that is, change our ways because there will be a new order founded on righteousness and justice. We can best prepare for the coming of the Lord by doing this now.
