“There was reclining on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.” (Jn 13:23)
Today is the Feast of Saint John, “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” He was intimately close to the Lord and obviously received profound revelations from Him as seen in how he articulates His heart in his gospel. His essays on the pre-existence and divinity of the Word-made-flesh and His Incarnation, and his definition of God as love, comprise some of the most notable verses of scripture.
John was known for having a short fuse. But he seemed to have outgrown it as he started seeing that love for his brothers is proof of one’s love for God. If we also "recline on Jesus chest," we would also “hear the heartbeat of God.” That would also then turn our hatred into compassion. Like John, we are disciples whom Jesus loves, and also disciples through whom His same love spreads.
