Easter Friday, April 5: “Victory over Mortality”

1 Corinthians 15: 53: “For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.”

While many religions have trouble dealing with man’s mortal body, deeming it an evil encumbrance waiting to be discarded, Christianity looks forward to the day when, after a period of rest, our mortal bodies are changed by God into an incorruptible, immortal vessel in which our spirits and souls can dwell forever. Our spirits having already been resurrected at baptism, the resurrection of  our bodies shall one day follow that of the firstfruit, Jesus Christ, and the saying will come to pass, “Death is swallowed up in victory.” (v. 54) There’s your victory over mortality!
