Easter Monday, April 10: “Resurrection Sign”

Jonah 2: 6: “I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, but You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God.”

Jonah’s adventure is one of many signs in the Old Testament that point to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said so, (Matthew 12: 39, 40), and even Jonah realized something deeper was going on than just the deep blue sea. Notice, he says he is at the roots of the mountains, and the earth, not the sea, had imprisoned him. Further, the word ‘pit’ means ‘corruption’ or ‘decay;’ the same word that David used in Psalm 16: 10 (cf. Acts 2: 27). Sounds like a sign to me!
