Psalm 88: 8, 9a:“You have removed my acquaintances far from me; You have made me an object of loathing to them; I am shut up and cannot go out. My eye has wasted away because of affliction.” Lest we think we are alone in our pandemic woes, listen to the experiences of the psalmist: He was separated from his acquaintances (social distancing), he could not go out (quarantine), and his eye had wasted away (too much screen time). Today or 2500 years ago, the cry is the same, to cry out to the Lord for help (v. 13), and the eternal answer comes from today’s Gospel: “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him!” (Mark 9: 7)
