January 26, 2024 Daily Dose of Discernment

My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see. (Psalm 40:12)

In Christ, God has reconciled the world to Himself, not counting men's sins against them (1 Corinthians 5:19). It was an act of faithfulness and justice that He forgave us and cleansed us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). That truth will never change.

So we can just sin, right? God forgives anyway. Wrong. David says that our iniquities blind us from seeing the truth that the Lord will not withhold His compassion from us and that His lovingkindness and His truth will continually preserve us (Psalm 40:11-12).  When that happens, Paul in the New Testament says we are alienated from God and become enemies in our minds (Colossians 1:21). It is this perceived estrangement that is detrimental to our relationship with Him and gets us in trouble. That's why we should not sin. In the first place, if we really love Him, we would only do things that would please Him, not otherwise.
