“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21)

The earth is the Lord's and all it contains. He is the creator and owner of all things. To ascribe ownership to anyone else is to deny this basic and unchangeable truth.

What Jesus really means with His famous repartee above is that we are His. Using the Pharisees' and Herodians' logic about the bearer and the image it bears, He reiterates that God made in His image and likeness. That makes us and our lives His. This is why we are to live for Him, because it is right to give Him thanks and praise and because it is for our good.
