Who can be sure that the human spirit goes up to God and that the spirit of an animal goes down into the ground?

Before the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, the people of God knew little or nothing about the hope of resurrection. Today, we have the good news that Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death. So that as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Hallelujah!

This is the Catholic faith. We believe that not only will our spirits live again and return to fellowship with God, but our bodies will be resurrected. Our blessed hope is not that part of our human makeup will live forever in another world, but that we will be fully restored, spirit, soul and body, along with the rest of creation, in a new earth. Because Jesus is making all things new.
