Momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison. (2 Corinthians 4:17)
Paul suffered a great deal for the gospel. Yet his perspective reveals an extraordinarily strong faith stemming from an understanding of God’s sure promises. He declares that our fleeting troubles are light, obviously because of his confidence that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Furthermore, that they are not nothing compared to the future God has in store for us.
We may not realize it, but participating in the sufferings of Jesus prepares us for that glorious life of the world to come. Not that we will earn eternal life because we do so, but that it will make getting there sweeter. May God grant that “we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace.”
