My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear. (Psalm 38:4)
God is holy. That’s why He hates sin. But He is also love. That’s why His compassions for the sinner fail not. And because His love always desires and pursues what's good for us, He doesn't want sin to destroy us.
Probably inspired by another experience, David echoes the same sentiment in another Psalm and sings that his iniquities have overtaken him so that he is not able to see the unchanging truth that God will not withhold His compassion from him but that His lovingkindness and truth will continually preserve him. The same obviously resonates with Paul and so he writes something similar. He proclaims that sin alienates us from God and makes us His enemies not in truth, but in our minds. Because sin blinds us and keeps us from seeing God's constant love. This is why we should not sin, not because it offends Him, but because it robs us of life.
