May 3, 2024 Daily Dose of Discernment

“Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3)

It’s obvious that Jesus is speaking in a hyperbolic language here, intentionally using exaggeration to catch the attention of His hearers and get a point across more effectively. The impossibility of His illustration leaves an indelible mark in their memory.

The bottom line of His message is that we should be conscious of our own weaknesses before taking the role of judge of the flaws of others because we might find that in most cases, we have more than they. If that is the case, then we are hypocrites. There is only one Judge - God. We actually have no time to judge others, considering that a lifetime may not be enough to completely right our own wrongs and to be conformed to the image of His Son.
