Monday, July 10: “Modified Obedience?”
1 Samuel 15: 22: “Samuel said, ‘Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.’”
King Saul really thought he had been obedient to God’s command, but he believed he had a better way to carry it out: destroy most of the people and goods in the heat of battle, while saving the best to sacrifice publicly when everyone was watching. Sounds logical, right? But God isn’t always about logic. When it comes to His commands, ours is not to analyze and improve upon them according to our preferences. Ours is to obey and heed–totally. Anything else is disobedience.
