Monday, May 1: “Animosity through Envy”

Luke 6: 2: “Some of the Pharisees said, ‘Why do You do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?’”

From the moment people began to say about Jesus, “What is this? A new teaching with authority!” (Mark 1: 27) and “He’s better than our scribes” (Matthew 7: 29), He had a new set of enemies. The scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees, filled with envy, began hounding Him everywhere He went, looking for reasons to accuse Him. Here, they even follow Him (uninvited) to His Sunday dinner! What business was it of theirs whether He ate at Pita Palace or Matzo Mania? Envy will make people do unimaginable things–their envy even brought Jesus to the cross (Matthew 27: 11).
