Monday, May 27: “The Holy Trinity: Beyond Labels”

1 Timothy 1: 1: “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, Who is our hope.”

We know that Jesus saves; likewise, that God the Father is our hope. But here, as in many other places in scripture, God is called ‘Savior’, and Christ is called ‘our hope.’ Confusing? Only if we get stuck in the rut of ‘The Father’s role is this, the Son’s role is that.’ The Holy Trinity is not about roles or labels. As St. Athanasius says, “Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit.” Just know that there is one God, and when any of the Three Persons does any divine act, it is one act of the one God.
