Monday, September 18: “Tempted to Follow”
Matthew 4: 10: “Then Jesus said to [the devil], ‘Go, Satan! For it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’ ”
We can say, “I live by the Word of God, I don’t put the Lord to the test, and I worship only the Lord my God. I’m resisting all the devil’s temptations!” But the real issue in the wilderness was this: Who would set the agenda of Jesus’ life? The devil showed Him the bread, he led Him to the pinnacle of the temple, and he took Him to the high mountain. He was trying to set the agenda for Jesus’ life; that’s the big-picture temptation Jesus rejected. How about us? Do we follow the ways set by the One Who loves us, or the one who is against us?
