“Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” (Luke 13:23)
Jesus is the Savior of the world. But what does that mean? Many believe He saves us from a posthumous eternity of torment in hell and to an eternity of bliss in heaven. If that’s all there is to it, what's our present life on earth for? Why not just end it now and secure and fast track our afterlife destiny?
It's interesting how that Jesus responds to the question in the text above by likening salvation to feasting at the table in the kingdom of God, an illustration of love, joy, peace, and harmony. He describes the way into this kingdom as a narrow door which very few walk. To be saved, then, is to live in a manner consistent with this kingdom in this life here and now and bring about (and hasten) its predestined future fullness.
