“Do not fear … do not fear … do not fear …” (Matthew 10:26, 28, 30)
Three times in five verses Jesus encourages His disciples to not be afraid. He has been warning them that if people persecuted Him, their teacher, they would surely persecute His followers as well. That’s why He is preparing them and strengthening their faith for when the time comes. He tells them that if they were to fear anyone, they should fear the God who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna, But He would not do that in the first place. Because if He is concerned for lowly sparrows, He is more concerned for His children. He even numbers the hairs on their heads. So if the only entity worth fearing is for them, who can be against them? That’s why He is saying that there is absolutely no reason to fear.
