October 6, 2024 Daily Dose of Discernment

Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” (Mark 10:2)

A man who understands the meaning of Holy Matrimony would never venture to ask such a self-serving question. The sacrament of marriage is a sacred covenant into which a husband and wife enter to fulfill a mission from God who instituted it. In doing so, they themselves become a sacrament that mirrors he love that eternally goes on in the community of the Godhead. That visible expression is their witness to the world and is a lifetime vocation. Since love is the intention and pursuit of the good of the other and not of self, looking for grounds for divorce should be out of the question. For the same reason, a man leaves his the comfort and convenience of parents' household to be joined to his wife. He stops being the beneficiary of good and starts being the provider of good. We should realize that it’s way beyond what the world overly romanticized but about how best they can fulfill their God-ordained calling as a team.
