Saturday, March 15: “Manifested Identity”

Deuteronomy 11: 18-20: “You shall therefore impress these words of Mine upon your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

There are still some Orthodox Jews who follow these verses literally. Doesn’t that seem a little fanatical? Perhaps not. It illustrates our identity as “living epistles” (2 Corinthians 3: 2, 3); those whose lives are based on the things of the Spirit, not of the flesh. And it is discipline such as this—figuratively, if not literally—that gets us there.
