Saturday, October 28: “Fret Not over the Pharisaical”

Matthew 12: 38, 39a: “Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, ‘Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.’ But He answered and said to them, ‘An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign.’”

Isn’t it interesting how often the Pharisees, along with their sidekicks the scribes and the Sadducees, show up in the Gospel, even though they had no good news of their own? Matthew mentions them around thirty times, Luke twenty-five, and John twenty–all but one in the first twelve chapters. But their provocation usually produces some of Jesus’ most on-point sermons, parables, and other teaching. The message? Do not be intimidated by the inevitable naysayers in your life; they, too, have their purpose from God.
