The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. (Acts 11:26)
The believers in Antioch were the first to be called Christians, or followers of Christ. Obviously outsiders saw their adherence to Jesus' radical (and to some, foolish) gospel of mercy, forgiveness, non-violence and love of enemies to the point of giving their lives for it. After two millenia, the name became loosely synonymous to membership in a religious group without having to give commitments.
The popular song declares that people will know we are Christians by our love. That is the real standard of discipleship. May the name “Christian” be restored to its true meaning, not to exclude certain ones who profess they are but are questionable, but to challenge everyone to live up to the example of their Lord, by His grace.
