September 23, 2021: Daily Dose of Discernment

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be enslaved by any. (1 Corinthians 6:12)

The Christian life is about denying ourselves, taking up our crosses and following Jesus. It is the opposite of the false gospel that entices people with the services of a divine genie on earth now and a guaranteed mansion in heaven later. We should be less concerned about our rights and more concerned about the common good.

Paul says that while technically all things are lawful, not all things are beneficial. We shouldn’t be asking how much we can indulge in and still be a Christian; that would indicate we are in bondage to selfish lusts. Rather, we should be asking what we can do for the glory of God and to bring about good for others and for ourselves. Doing so would prove we are partakers of the divine nature.
