“Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)
The crux of the Lord’s Prayer is right here in this verse. As His disciples, we desire for His kingdom to come and His will to be done in this world. Why? Because here people do what is right in their own eyes and it leads to chaos and destruction, the opposite of the design of the Creator which is harmony and fullness of life. At the same time, we realize we are His chosen instruments through whom He answers our petition.
Sadly, some Christians don’t pray this prayer, and some do but don’t understand its message. That’s why their hope is in escaping the chaos, not in receiving the promise of restoration of all things in the new earth. That new earth will come down from heaven. That doesn’t mean a literal replacement of the planet will physically descend, but that the government of God will be fully operational in the renewed original. Easter was Day 1 of that project, and believers participate in it until its completion when the knowledge and love of God, and therefore the glory of the Lord, fill the whole earth.
