A wife must not leave her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife. (1 Corinthians 7:10-11)
God hates divorce because it is the opposite of what He does and who He is, the God who gathers and unites. It is the devil who scatters and divides.
Paul is saying in the verses above that a married person who decides to separate has only two choices: remain unmarried or be reconciled to his spouse. Marrying another is adultery. Married couples are bound in a lifetime covenant.
If we look at baptism in that context, we will understand that a Christian also binds himself to the Church for life. If he chooses to leave, he cuts himself off from the fullness of the blessing God ordained within the Church. His only other option is reconciliation. Entering into a covenant elsewhere is sin. Harsh? No. Truth.
