“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
This famous statement of Jesus is the main point of His discourse in this section of the Sermon on the Mount. He teaches us not to worry about basic necessities like food, drink and clothing, But He doesn’t mean we should be totally unconcerned about them. In fact, He says God the Father, our Creator, knows we need them. But His point is for us to put His kingdom first before anything else. When we do, the rest will follow, not in a magical way, but because we will be more productive when we get our priorities straight. Having a kingdom perspective will free us from anxiety caused by an excessive attachment to material things and help us develop the virtue of contentment.
