When Jesus saw people vying for the best seats at a dinner hosted by a Pharisee, He taught them about humility. He told them it’s better to take the place of least honor and be asked to move up rather than to take the best place and be told to move to a less honorable seat.
Jesus’ message is more than just about banquet seating. He wants us to follow His example of emptying Himself of divine privileges and taking on our human nature in order to give us life because that resulted in Him being highly exalted by God. And that’s what He wants, not for us to be humbled, but for us to be exalted. That will only happen through humility. May we learn this divine virtue and live it out not for the reward of exaltation but for the joy of being found in the likeness of the Lord.
