Sunday, June 2: “Original Superfood”

Luke 11: 3: “Give us each day our daily bread.” What is “daily bread”?

Jesus is not telling us here to pray for pandesal or Jollibee. The Greek word is ‘epiousios’, and Sts. Jerome, Cyril, and Cyprian all translate it ‘supersubstantial bread’--in other (English) words, the bread is of a higher nature than that of our normal fare. So where can this superfood, the Body of Christ, be found? Not in the local bakeshop, but in the local Church, as we celebrate the Eucharist; more than just a bible memory aid or peculiar ceremony, but a nourishment of our spirit, souls, and bodies. The Isrealites had manna, we have Christ’s Body and Blood.
