Sunday, May 26: “The Holy Trinity: Seen by Faith”

John 1: 33, 34: “I [John] did not recognize Him [Jesus], but He Who sent me to baptize in water [God] said to me, ‘He upon Whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One Who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’ I myself have seen, and testify that this is the Son of God.”

In this verse, in which all three Persons of the Holy Trinity are seen, John the Baptist appears to have no struggle with Trinitarian theology. Of course he recognized his cousin Jesus of Nazareth, but he did not recognize Him as the Son of God until, according to what God the Father had revealed to him, he saw the Holy Spirit descend and remain upon Jesus. Did John understand it all? Probably not. But in faith he believed and obeyed what he had heard. If John the Baptist could respond to the Trinity in this way, so can we.
