Thursday, September 12: “Ever-ready”
John 11: 20: “Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house.”
To understand why Mary “stayed at the house” when her sister Martha went out to meet Jesus, know that the Greek actually says that she “was sitting at the house.” In other words, she was ready to do what she always did when Jesus visited: sit at His feet (Luke 10: 38-42). She only went out when Martha told her that He was calling for her (vv. 28, 29). There’s a lesson there: When you’re in pain and need answers, get to where Jesus has spoken to you in the past.
