Tuesday, July 25: “Spread Your Wealth”
1 Samuel 25: 10, 11: “Nabal answered David’s servants and said, ‘Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants today who are each breaking away from his master. Shall I take my bread and my water and my meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men whose origin I do not know?’”
If there is a better negative role model in the whole bible than Nabal the Calebite, I have yet to see it. Instead of being thankful to David and his young men by sharing his abundant blessings with them, his greed and possessiveness reveals a heart devoid of virtue. Whatever our blessings, material or spiritual, God gives them to be shared–and not selectively, either. Ironically, David would soon have access to all Nabal’s wealth, when he married this man’s wife (and soon-to-be widow) Abigail; one of the best positive role models in the whole bible.
