Wednesday, August 16: “No Need for Schemes”

Acts 21: 22-24: “What, then, is to be done? [The Jewish believers} will certainly hear that you have come. Therefore do this that we tell you. We have four men who are under a vow; Take them and purify yourself along with them, and pay their expenses so that they may shave their heads; and all will know that there is nothing to the things which they have been told about you,but that you yourself also walk orderly, keeping the law.”

In Caesarea St. Paul had been given his Gethsemane moment, when the prophet Agabus had told him, “If you go to Jerusalem, the Jews will arrest you,” and Paul replied, “I’m ready.” (vv. 11-14) The die was cast. So why did some of the brethren in Jerusalem feel the need to concoct this scheme to avoid it? Sounds logical, it should have worked, but, as we have seen in the past few chapters and in the coming verses, the Jews from Asia were far from logical.
