Wednesday, July 5: “Uncircumcised Ears III”
1 Samuel 12: 18, 19: “Samuel called to the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel. Then all the people said to Samuel, ‘Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, so that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil by asking for ourselves a king.’”
Notice the reaction of the people when confronted by the Lord for their wickedness in asking for a king. It was not, “We’re sorry, please cancel our request for a king.” It was rather, “Please pray for us (which Samuel promised to do, v. 23), but we’re still going to go with the king thing.” Both they and their new king, with their unhearing ears and unfeeling hearts, were swept away before long.
