Wednesday, May 1: “The Profundity of Priesthood IV”

Matthew 6: 22, 23: “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”

The key to these potentially confusing verses is in their context: The verses  above and below them (vv. 19-21; 24) show us the importance of seeing and recognizing what is truly valuable–earthly treasures or heavenly treasures. In the Old Testament, no blind man could serve as priest (Leviticus 21: 18); likewise, no one spiritually blinded by the deceitfulness of riches can function effectively in Christ’s royal priesthood.
