Wednesday, September 4: “Christ the Great I AM
John 8: 58: “Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM.”
It does not take a PHD in either Genealogy or Math to realize that there must be more to this statement of Jesus than meets the eye. Actually, he has already stated twice in this chapter that His hearers “must believe that I AM” (v. 24) and that they would “know that I AM” (v. 28). This third time He uses the phrase, they finally get it: He is using the same words that God used to name Himself to Moses in Exodus 3: 15. And, they’re right back to being His enemies (v. 59). Nevertheless, He’s still the great I AM.
